Note Taking Project
Description:
A CFI study indicated that our students do not see a correlation between note taking and academic performance; the same study found that the school's teachers see a clear relationship between the two. Indeed, one LaGuardia math teacher said, "There is a misconception that kids should not write in a math class. It is helpful to ask students to review their notes to find answers as a means of holding students accountable. There must be common approaches that are used by all teachers." There are at least two issues at play here: Many students do not understand the importance of note taking, and several were never explicitly taught the skill.
English teacher Mr. Moore worked on a two-year CFI project involving note taking. The objective was to learn ways to help students develop the skills necessary to take excellent notes. The results were impressive, encouraging, and useful. Documentation and related lesson plans can be found at LaProgram.org.
Faculty Involvement:
Ms. Healy participated during the first year. Ms. Pace produced a related lesson plan. Several teachers, including Ms. Washburn and Mr. Lonegan, took part in a professional development workshop on note taking led by Mr. Moore. Results were shared with faculty members through presentations, articles, and Web documents.
