Faculty Involvement:

Below you will find descriptions of ways that our teachers are embracing technology:

ToonDoo.com: Each year, the Biology Department at our school assigns a cell project to our students. In past years, students would make a model of an animal or plant cell. Other projects included presentations showing various body cells, etc. Last year, the cell project Mr. Gonzalez assigned called for students to create a cell analogy story book. That is, each cell part would be a character in a story designed for children. This, by the way, is not an original idea. It's been done many times; however, one weakness in the assignment is that (especially at LaGuardia) students who are not art majors may not be able to draw well. In comes ToonDoo. ToonDoo is a piece of free online software where the students were able to drag and drop characters, props, and talking bubbles. This levels the playing field. No pencils required! The students did an amazing job creating their cell analogy children's books. The software would also be an excellent addition to a foreign language assignment or a history political cartoon assignment.

Mr. Lewis and Mr. Crum supported the organization of a PD that familiarized teachers with the software used to create material for the 3-D printer. Mr. Singh makes use of multimedia presentations. A large number of teachers have created Web sites as a result of a professional development workshop led by Ms. Regnier, the Librarian, and different subject teachers.

Description:

The Technology Project involves familiarizing educators with electronic tools that can be used to meet student needs in the Information Age. Before CFI presentations, workshops, and articles, many faculty members had not heard of ARIS or Daedalus. The CFI Team has made presentations to the faculty about these online interfaces that allowed teachers to understand and make meaningful conclusions about student performance. We also organized professional development workshops around Easy Grade Pro, AutoDesk, and Excel.
